TotTaps requires no download, no login, and no setup. Here's all you need to do:
- Open TotTaps in any web browser on your phone, tablet or computer.
- Tap "Start Tapping β It's Free" on the landing screen. The app will ask to go fullscreen β allow it.
- Hand the device to your toddler. Every key press, tap or click now creates a colourful explosion on screen.
- Letters AβZ speak their name out loud. Numbers 0β9 are read as words. Special keys show fun illustrations.
- To exit, hold the top-left corner for 2 seconds to open the parent panel, then tap "Exit Fullscreen".
TotTaps goes fullscreen automatically when you tap Start. For extra protection against exits, use your device's built-in kiosk features:
- iPad β Guided Access: Go to Settings β Accessibility β Guided Access β turn it on. Open TotTaps, triple-click the side button, tap Start. Your child can't leave the app.
- Android β Screen Pinning: Go to Settings β Security β Screen Pinning β turn it on. Open TotTaps, tap the recent apps button, then tap the pin icon.
- Laptop / Desktop: TotTaps uses the browser's native Fullscreen API. Press F11 or use the fullscreen button in the parent panel for a clean locked experience.
- Chromebook: Press the fullscreen key (F4) or use the parent panel button. Works well for nursery and classroom use.
The parent panel is hidden so your toddler can't accidentally open it. There are two ways to open it:
- Hold the top-left corner of the screen for 2 seconds. A settings icon appears β keep holding until the panel opens.
- Type the word "parent" on the keyboard. The panel opens as soon as the word is complete.
Inside the parent panel you can:
- Toggle sound on/off β useful for public places or when a nap is nearby.
- Reduce motion β turns off shaking and heavy effects for motion-sensitive children.
- Change theme β switch between Party, Jungle, Ocean, Space, Dino and Diwali themes.
- Set a session timer β choose 2, 5, 10 or 15 minutes. A progress bar counts down. When time is up, a fun Tap Report card appears.
- Reset the session β clears the tap count and restarts the timer if one is set.
- Exit fullscreen β safely returns to normal browser view.
Each theme changes the background, particle colours, sound style and emoji set. Here's what to expect from each:
Regular letter and number keys speak their name aloud and burst with colour. Special keys go further β each shows a unique hand-drawn illustration:
-
6β12 months β Sensory exploration
Babies enjoy the cause-and-effect of pressing and seeing something happen. Use touch mode on a tablet. Any tap triggers colour bursts. Keep sessions to 2β3 minutes. -
12β18 months β Cause and effect
Toddlers begin to understand that they are making things happen. Point at the screen together. Say the letters as they appear. The Ocean or Party theme works well at this stage. -
18 monthsβ2 years β Letter & number recognition
TotTaps speaks each letter and number aloud. Sit with your child and repeat what the app says. "A! Can you say A?" This age group often has a favourite key they press repeatedly β that's perfectly normal. -
2β3 years β Keyboard exploration
Children can now deliberately press keys to find specific illustrations. "Can you find the key that shows a car?" The chaos progression system (Calm β Wild β Legendary) keeps older toddlers engaged as sessions progress. -
3β4 years β Pre-literacy play
Older toddlers enjoy pressing letters they recognise from their name. Point out "that's the first letter of your name!" Use the Smash Report card at the end of sessions to celebrate their effort.
TotTaps is designed for short, supervised sessions β not hours of unsupervised use. Here's how to make it work well:
- Use the timer. Set a 5-minute limit in the parent panel. When the timer ends, the Tap Report card appears β a natural, positive ending to the session.
- Sit with your child. The most developmental benefit comes when a parent names what appears on screen. "Look, you made a butterfly!"
- Use it in context. TotTaps is perfect for waiting rooms, flights, or those 10 minutes you desperately need to finish something. Not as a daily babysitter.
- Follow your child's lead. If they lose interest after 2 minutes, that's fine. Don't extend the session. Short and joyful beats long and forced.
- Balance with physical play. After a TotTaps session, do a physical version β let your toddler bang on real pots and pans. The digital and physical versions of the same energy are both valuable.
